HISTORY

The University of Vale do Sapucaí (Universidade do Vale do Sapucaí , UNIVÁS) is supported by the Higher Education Foundation of Vale do Sapucaí (Fundação de Ensino Superior do Vale do Sapucaí), a philanthropic entity present in Pouso Alegre for over four decades. In 1999, the institution has obtained the accreditation as a University by the State Board of Education from Minas Gerais, through State Decree 40,627. In 2011, UNIVÁS was accredited again by the National Council of Education (opinion CNECES nº 3292011).

The Higher Education Foundation of Vale do Sapucaí was established in 1964, through State law n. 3,227. In 1968, the Medical Science College Dr. José Antônio Garcia Coutinho (Faculdade de Ciências Médicas Dr. José Antônio Garcia Coutinho), today Health Sciences College (Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde , FACIMPA), was authorised to operate by the Decree 63.66668 and held its first entrance exams for Medicine course in 1969. Currently, in addition to the Medicine course, the institution offers, in the Health field, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Psychology and Physical Education, that attend, added to the Biological Sciences’ course students, more than 1,800 students.

In the year of 1975, UNIVÁS received from the State of Minas Gerais Government, through donation, the Clinical Hospital Samuel Libânio (Hospital das Clínicas Samuel Libânio, HCSL), with the goal of turning it into hospital school and establish the indispensable support for the Medicine course. Currently, the HCSL is secondary and tertiary reference to 53 municipalities of southern Minas Gerais, serving a population of approximately one and a half million inhabitants.

The Hospital offers 86% of their beds to the network of National Health Service (Sistema Único de Saúde, SUS), characterized as an Anchor Hospital of SUS to Pouso Alegre and surrounding cities. Specifically in the area of wounds, the HCSL maintains an outpatient clinic that offers daily service to about 40 patients from more than ten cities in the region, totaling about 200 consultations per week and 800 consultations per month. In this ambulatory, there are the working staff from the hospital itself and municipal civil servants, in addition to UNIVÁS’ teachers. It constitutes a core assistance, teaching and research center, receiving undergraduate students from different courses such as Nursing, Medicine, Physioterapy, Psychology and Nutrition. The Professional Master's Degree in Sciences Applied to Health from UNIVÁS was recommended by Capes with grade 4 in 2012 (Letter n° 220-242012CTCCAAICGAADAVCAPES), and began its activities in March, 2013.

Its area of concentration, multi-and interdisciplinarity in wounds, contributes to the production of qualified professionals to the development of new products and techniques in the area of wounds, for the benefit of patients, in addition to knowledge transfer to a large number of undergraduates from different health areas.
